September is always a big month for television. On Monday September 14, the Emmys will celebrate the best of the year, as favourites including The Pitt, Pluribus, Hacks and Widow’s Bay vie for the top prize on the small screen. But when it comes to new television, September also delivers. From returning favourites – including season six of Slow Horses and second seasons of The Gentlemen and Mobland – to brand new addictive romances, here is what the Glamour team will be watching this month.
September 3: The Gentlemen season 2, Netflix
Season one saw Theo James’ debonair The Duke take on the London underworld in Guy Ritchie’s prequel to his own film The Gentlemen. This new season, which also co-stars Kaya Scodelario and Ray Winstone alongside new cast members Michele Morrone, Sergio Castellitto, Hugh Bonneville and Maya Jama, moves the action to Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy as The Duke meets his match in the Mafia. Watch for the wild – and very loud – action sequences and the exquisitely tailored three piece suits.
September 9: Last Seen, AppleTV
The first Australian-set AppleTV original, Last Seen features a who’s who of our local industry. Fresh off The Devil Wears Prada 2, Patrick Brammall stars as a former police detective turned emergency services responder whose life was torn apart when his daughter went missing. A decade later, new evidence reopens the case in this chilling and propulsive mystery series. Daniel Henshall, Brendan Cowell, Zahra Newman and rising stars Felix Cameron (Eli in Netflix’s Boy Swallows Universe miniseries) and newcomer Chloe Jean Lourdes complete the cast.
September 10: Crew Girl, Netflix
Get ready for your next obsession. Crew Girl is set to do for the sport of rowing what Off Campus and Heated Rivalry have done for the world of ice hockey, following a prodigy single sculler called Teagan (Miku Martineau) whose world is rocked by family scandal. As she enrols at a new school for a fresh start, she discovers that there is no girls rowing program at this prestigious prep school. Caught up in a rivalry between the team captain Josh (Sam Braun) and the quiet, underestimated Cam (Kyle Clark), Teagan has to learn how to compete against the boys, both in the water and out. Sign us up.
September 16: Slow Horses season six, AppleTV
Just like clockwork, September heralds a new season of Slow Horses. Now in its sixth year, Slow Horses chronicles the mishappenings of a group of disgraced MI6 agents – played by Jack Lowden, Christopher Chung, Saskia Reeves, Tom Brooke and Aimee-Ffion Edwards – under the so-called supervision of the most disgraced MI6 agent of all, Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman). There isn’t a show on television right now as delightful as Slow Horses, with its fantastic cast – Kristin Scott Thomas, Jonathan Pryce and Sophie Okonedo also feature – and its sharp, biting dialogue. Thankfully, there are nine novels in the original book series by Mick Herron (and counting), so we can rely on many more seasons of Slow Horses in Septembers to come.
September 17: Monster: The Lizzie Bordern Story, Netflix
The life of Lizzie Bordern, a 19th century woman accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe, has already been immortalised many times in pop culture, from schoolyard rhymes to the big screen. (A 2018 film saw Chloe Sevigny star as Lizzie and Kristen Stewart as her maid Bridget.) In Monster: The Lizzie Bordern Story, this violent tale is given the Ryan Murphy treatment, in the fourth iteration of the Monster series, dramatising different high-profile murder cases. But Monster: The Lizzie Bordern Story will be the first to focus on a woman, with rising star Ella Beatty (If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) starring as Lizzie, alongside Vicky Krieps as the maid Bridget, Rebecca Hall as Abby, Lizzie’s stepmother and Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden, Lizzie’s father. Fans of the Monster franchise will recognise Hunnam; he previously starred in Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
September 18: MobLand season two, Paramount+
Glamour editor Remy’s favourite binge-watch, MobLand returns for a second season of Irish crime syndicate family drama this month. Tom Hardy leads the show as the loyal Harry Da Souza, fixer for the Harrigan family, led by patriarch Conrad (Pierce Brosnan) and matriarch Maeve (Helen Mirren). The first season was a huge success, becoming one of the most-watched original series in Paramount+ history. This new season will see the Harrigans navigate a crime world civil war, internal and external rivals and the ramifications of a power vacuum.
September 19: Outlander: Blood of My Blood season two, Stan
After eight seasons and more than 100 episodes, Outlander aired its last, steamy episode in May this year. The time-travelling romance series that saw Claire, a 1940s English nurse and Jamie, a Jacobite-era Scotsman, fall in love, has been a perennial favourite ever since the first episode aired in 2014. This prequel, which chronicles the love stories of both Claire and Jamie’s parents, is now in its second season. And for serious Outlander fans, don’t worry – there’s time travel in this spin-off too.
