Offering hydration, nourishment and an instant glow in a bottle, shimmering body oil is a quick, effective solution to transforming dry, dull winter skin.

Makeup artist Brooke Low keeps a range of oils in her arsenal for various occasions.

“A pearlescent finish is the ultimate choice for red carpets and high-definition cameras,” she says, explaining that the ultra-fine pearl pigments catch light naturally without revealing texture. “It creates a seamless ‘lit-from-within’ glow on collarbones, shoulders, and shins.”

Want to create the illusion of Pilates-toned pins? Go for bronze oils, which can have a sculpting effect and add warmth and dimension.

“For maximum drama,” the celebrity makeup expert adds, she suggests a more defined glitter, a fun finishing touch to a festival look.

There are other considerations to finding the perfect shimmering body oil, too. Foremost, the base. Look for formulations which are nourishing and contain skin-friendly oils such as squalane, jojoba or macadamia. “They’re lightweight and absorb into the skin rather than leaving a heavy, sticky film,” Low says.

And if you’re planning to pair your sparkling, showstopping skin with a light coloured outfit, a transfer test before is essential.
